Jack first joined the Rotary Club of Lake Forest, Illinois in 1978. Due to an overseas assignment in Saudi Arabia and Egypt he withdrew from the Lake Forest Club in 1981 but returned in 1986, and served as its President in 1990-91. Jack was then active with District 6440 and served as a Governor's Representative. During this period, Jack and his wife Jan hosted an exchange student from Brazil and two adults from the USSR prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall who were guests of Rotary International in Evanston.
In 1993, Jack moved to Galena and immediately joined the Galena Rotary Club. He also became a District 6420 Rotary Foundation consultant from 1993 to 1995. In 1996, he took the Rotary Foundation chair of the Galena Club which he still holds. Jack and Jan have hosted a GSE team member from Belgium as well as two short term students from the Netherlands.
Jack is a graduate of DePauw University, Greencastle, IN with a BA in Education and received an MA degree in Management from Webster University, Missouri. He made a career of his military service retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1981 with the rank of Captain. During his career he served eight years afloat, had tours in Washington, D.C. and Viet Nam, and was commanding officer of Naval Reserve Centers in Indianapolis and ST. Louis. His last tour was as Deputy Commander, Naval Reserve Readiness Command, Great Lakes. Since retiring he has held numerous interesting positions which have taken him and Jan to many overseas areas: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia ad Russia. While teaching organizational behavior for the University of Dubuque's overseas MBA degree program from 1994 to 1998, he maintained 100% attendance visiting over 15 different clubs in Hong Kong, Kowloon, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Seremban, Kota Kinnebalu, and Petaling Java, Malaysia. He has also maintained 100% attendance throughout his 18 years in Rotary.
Besides being members of the Rotary International Bequest Society and Benefactors, both he and Jan are Paul Harris Fellows along with their three children, their spouses and Jack's mother and father.
