Ray became a member of the Rockford Downtown Rotary Club in 1977, served on nine committee (as Chairman of five), as a Director for two years, as Vice-President and as President. In 1989 he received the Rockford Club's Service Above Self Award. He is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Rotary Foundation Benefactor, and a life member of the Paul Harris 711 Club. At the district level, he has been a member or Chairman of several committees and served as a Governor's Representative from 1989 to 1991 and from 1994 to 1997. He was his club's delegate to the Rotary International Convention in Melbourne, Australia in 1993.
A native of rural Pella, Iowa, Ray is a graduate of Battle Ridge School, Pella High School, Central College in Pella, the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois. His undergraduate and graduate study were mainly Classical Philology, English, History, Music, and Education. Foreign study was at the American Academy in Rome (Fulbright Scholar), the Vergilian School at Cumae and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens (Field Scholar). Other study was at Drake University and North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
He served in the United States Army in Arkansas, Maryland, and North Carolina. After graduating from the Army Intelligence School in Baltimore, he served in the Counterintelligence Corps (CIC) in North Carolina. In his profession of education, he taught at seven institutions at the high school and college levels in English and Classics. He taught at Rockford College for 30 years and served as Chairman of the Classics Department for that time also. In professional organizations he served as President of the Illinois Classical Conference and of Chicago Classical Club, as Secretary of the Vergilian Society of America and of the Classical Society of the American Academy in Rome, and as a Vice-President of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). He is the founder of the Rockford Society of the AIA. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Ray's volunteer efforts include participation on the Rockford Community Concert Board, the Rockford Area Arts Council, and in the SOURCE Program in Rockford Schools, for which he received a Volunteer of the Year Award after 12 years of service. He is a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rockford, where he has been a supply organist as well as at other churches in the area. He enjoys travel, photography, musical concerts, reading, sports events and philately.
